Construction has started on the new Lubbock Psychiatric Center, according to an announcement by Governor Greg Abbott. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is overseeing the project, which received $121 million in funding from Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature. The facility is expected to be completed in 2027.
“Texas continues to increase access to mental healthcare in every corner of our state,” said Governor Abbott. “This new hospital will offer Texans in the South Plains high-quality treatment closer to home. I thank the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for their crucial work to expand and improve mental health services for Texans in rural communities and across our great state.”
“Ongoing investment in our state hospitals leads to more resilient individuals and healthier communities,” said Deputy Executive Commissioner for HHSC Health and Specialty Care System Scott Schalchlin. “Patients at the Lubbock Psychiatric Center will receive the care they need in a secure, state-of-the art building that helps facilitate their recovery.”
The new facility will cover 108,430 square feet and provide 50 maximum-security beds. It will be located off Peach Avenue near Highway 84, featuring modern design standards intended to support patient recovery. Security at the center will include perimeter fencing, video surveillance, alarms, electronic monitors, and additional staff.
Since 2017, more than $2.5 billion has been allocated by Governor Abbott and lawmakers for improvements or expansions of state hospitals throughout Texas. Similar construction projects are ongoing in Amarillo, Dallas, Wichita Falls, and Terrell. Two other expansion or renovation efforts are also being planned. In 2024, replacement state hospitals opened in Austin and San Antonio.
