Governor Greg Abbott met with Spanish Ambassador to the United States Ángeles Moreno Bau at the Texas Capitol. The meeting focused on enhancing economic ties between Spain and Texas.
Ambassador Moreno Bau expressed support for Texans after severe flooding over the July 4th holiday, referencing a similar event in Valencia last year. She highlighted Spain's significant economic presence in Texas, with over 100 investment projects in sectors like energy, infrastructure, and steel manufacturing. Governor Abbott stated that Texas is a leading destination for foreign direct investment and has led in business relocation and expansion for 13 years.
The discussion also covered historical and cultural links between Texas and Spain. Both leaders noted the Spanish influence across Texas, including The Alamo's history as a Spanish mission. They also recognized the San Antonio Missions complex as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Spain ranks as the eighth-largest source of foreign direct investment projects in Texas. Since 2003, Spanish companies have invested $5.83 billion in 103 projects in the state, creating nearly 8,000 jobs. In 2024, trade between Texas and Spain amounted to $10.1 billion. Texas exports account for 33.9% of all U.S. exports to Spain, while imports make up 8.2% of U.S. imports from Spain.
