Governor Greg Abbott announced that Pasadena has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This certification is part of a program initiated by TMO in 2016, aimed at fostering economic development and job creation in music-related sectors across Texas.

"Congratulations to the City of Pasadena on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation," Governor Abbott stated. He highlighted the significant impact of the Texas music industry, which supports 196,000 jobs and generates over $31 billion annually. Abbott emphasized ongoing collaboration with Music Friendly Texas Communities to promote local job creation and economic growth.

Senator Carol Alvarado remarked on Pasadena's musical heritage, citing "the world-famous Gilley’s honky-tonk" and local talent as central to its identity. She noted that this designation honors Pasadena's commitment to supporting Texas music while promoting economic opportunities.

Mayor Jeff Wagner expressed his excitement about the recognition: "We honor a rich musical legacy that resonates far beyond our city limits." He mentioned various aspects of Pasadena's musical culture, including its Philharmonic Orchestra, Mickey Gilley's influence, and Tejano roots led by La Fiebre.

Councilwoman Pat Van Houte pointed out Pasadena's diverse musical influences such as Cajun music, jazz, and gospel. She said that this designation officially acknowledges Pasadenans' love for music.

Sherry Free from the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo described the certification as a significant achievement for Pasadena’s culture and economy. She believes it will lead to new partnerships and creative opportunities within the community.

Murline Staley from the Pasadena Strawberry Festival highlighted how this recognition underscores local stories and celebrations while boosting tourism and investment. She sees it as a platform for continued growth in Pasadena.

The certification ceremony will take place during Pasadena’s annual 4th Fest celebration on July 4th at the Convention Center and Municipal Fairgrounds. The event is cohosted by TMO, the Pasadena Economic Development Corporation (EDC), and Visit Pasadena.

Pasadena becomes the 86th city in Texas to receive this certification. The TMO has been instrumental since its founding in 1990 in developing Texas's music businesses and communities through initiatives like this program established in 2016.
