Houstonians for Great Public Schools (Houston GPS) has announced its support for the continued state intervention in Houston Independent School District (HISD), emphasizing the need for transparent community involvement. This statement was made by Executive Director Veronica Garcia.
Garcia responded to the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) decision to extend state intervention in HISD, acknowledging progress in student academic outcomes but stating it is insufficient. She stressed the importance of engaging families, educators, and students in decision-making processes. Garcia expressed gratitude to outgoing board members for their service and welcomed new leaders, highlighting the ongoing work needed to support Houston students' education and long-term success.
"The path forward must include deeper, more transparent engagement with the communities that HISD serves. Families, educators, and students deserve to be part of shaping the decisions that affect their schools and their futures. Real transformation will require collaboration — not just from the district itself - but from all of us who care about public education in Houston," said Garcia.
The TEA has extended its oversight of HISD through June 1, 2027, following a mandatory two-year review of the district's progress. Commissioner Mike Morath appointed four new members to the district’s Board of Managers. Under Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board’s leadership, HISD has seen academic improvements, particularly in special education services, financial oversight, and governance. However, further progress is necessary to meet three exit criteria related to academic performance, legal compliance in special education, and effective board governance. Four current board members will step down as four new appointees join on June 1, 2025.
Houston GPS works to enhance student outcomes by supporting school board members committed to strong public schools across neighborhoods. The organization prioritizes student-first policies and holds educational leaders accountable through clear expectations and community oversight. It empowers local communities by providing resources for electoral engagement and advocacy with decision-makers. Its mission focuses on fostering a lasting demand for quality public education led by effective leadership centered on students.
