Governor Greg Abbott has been sworn into the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Review Council. He participated virtually in the council's first public meeting, focusing on FEMA's future and its emergency response capabilities.
In his opening remarks, Governor Abbott expressed gratitude to President Donald J. Trump for establishing the FEMA Review Council. He noted that Texas frequently faces various disasters, such as fires and hurricanes, and emphasized the state's leadership in coordinating emergency responses with local, state, and federal partners. "I look forward to ongoing collaborative efforts with the Trump Administration to empower states to be the primary emergency response team for their local communities during a disaster," said Abbott.
President Trump appointed Governor Abbott to this bipartisan council last month. The group is responsible for reforming and streamlining national emergency management and disaster response systems.
The council was established by an Executive Order from President Trump on January 24. Its purpose is to assess FEMA's ability to address U.S. disasters effectively and impartially while advising on necessary changes to better serve national interests.
