Governor Greg Abbott has extended his congratulations to the City of Killeen for being named a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas. This designation marks the inaugural year of the program and highlights Killeen's efforts in enhancing tourism as an economic growth strategy.
"Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas," Governor Abbott stated. He emphasized that travelers contribute over $199 billion annually to the state's economy and support 1.3 million jobs. Abbott encouraged other communities to seek this certification to bolster local tourism and job creation.
Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell praised Killeen for its blend of rich history and diverse attractions, noting its connection to Fort Cavazos and its arts, shopping, and dining options. "This designation as a Tourism Friendly Community recognizes the city’s efforts to provide a great experience for every traveler," Fennell said.
Senator Pete Flores highlighted Killeen's commitment to using tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, urging other cities in Texas to pursue similar recognition. Representative Brad Buckley echoed these sentiments, citing Killeen's military history and modern amenities as key attractions.
Representative Hillary Hickland acknowledged Killeen's status as one of Texas's largest cities with a significant military presence, attributing its welcoming spirit as a draw for visitors nationwide.
Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau Manager Tanida Mullen expressed pride in the community's dedication to making visitors feel at home. She described the designation not only as an achievement but also as a reflection of Killeen’s vibrant experiences and warm hospitality.
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program invites local governments or non-profit organizations involved in tourism promotion to apply for certification. The program aims to strengthen relationships crucial for tourism development, educate leaders on tourism’s importance, prioritize strategies locally driven, and explore opportunities provided by Travel Texas.
