Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Garland has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This designation follows the completion of a multi-step certification process aimed at fostering economic development and job creation related to the music industry in Texas cities.
"Congratulations to the City of Garland on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation," said Governor Abbott. He emphasized that "music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state." The governor highlighted that with support from TMO, the Texas music industry contributes significantly to job creation and economic activity statewide.
Senator Bob Hall remarked on Garland's achievement, stating, "Garland’s designation as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community is a testament to the city’s vibrant cultural identity and its unwavering support for the arts." He noted that music plays a crucial role in economic opportunity and community pride in Garland.
Representative Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos also praised Garland's recognition, saying it celebrates "its deep musical roots and future-facing spirit." She cited examples like Willie Nelson's recording at Audio Dallas and performances by the Garland Symphony Orchestra as evidence of Garland's strong musical culture.
Mayor Scott LeMay expressed pride in Garland's musical history, noting that music has always been integral to the community. He mentioned various local traditions and events that highlight this heritage.
Garland Cultural Arts Director Amy Rosenthal shared her excitement about receiving this designation, acknowledging it as a reinforcement of their commitment to supporting local arts. She pointed out numerous live music events hosted throughout the year.
Jimmy Wallace, owner of Jimmy Wallace Guitars and founder of the Dallas International Guitar Festival, stated that being recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community is significant both personally and professionally. He emphasized how this recognition highlights Garland's unique music scene.
The official certification ceremony will take place on May 17 during an event celebrating Willie Nelson’s album "The Red-Headed Stranger," released 50 years ago. The ceremony will be cohosted by TMO and Garland Cultural Arts at Granville Arts Center.
Garland becomes the 83rd city to receive this certification under TMO's program, which began in 2016. The program aims to develop Texas' music industry by creating partnerships across more than 70 communities statewide.
