U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul and Chairman Mark E. Green have announced the formation of a bipartisan task force focused on enhancing national security for upcoming major international events. The newly established "Task Force on Securing the Homeland Amidst Special Events" will oversee federal security preparations for events such as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and other significant gatherings.

Vice Chairman McCaul will lead the task force, with additional members to be revealed soon. The task force's activities will include site visits, hearings, roundtables, and a final report as part of their oversight of National Special Security Events (NSSEs) and Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) events.

"As the U.S. prepares to host high-profile events like the Olympics and the World Cup, it’s imperative that we make robust security preparations to ensure Americans — and millions of international guests — can safely enjoy their experience," stated Vice Chairman McCaul. He emphasized that these events present opportunities but also attract threats from adversaries seeking to exploit them.

Chairman Green highlighted that hosting numerous international events is an opportunity to showcase American exceptionalism but also poses challenges for law enforcement due to potential threats. "It is of utmost importance that we learn from past incidents and ensure coordinated security efforts alongside state and local officials," he said.

The committee overseeing this initiative has jurisdiction over key agencies such as DHS, FEMA, TSA, and others involved in national security. "I look forward to undertaking this essential, bipartisan mission alongside my colleagues," added Chairman Green.

Background information indicates President Trump created a White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 through Executive Order 14234 in March. This new Congressional task force aims to support those efforts through legislative oversight.

Congressman McCaul brings his extensive background in counter-terrorism and national security to this role. His previous leadership roles include chairing investigations into significant incidents like the Boston bombing while serving as chairman of the Homeland Security Committee during prior Congresses.
