U.S. Congressman Brian Babin has put forward a bill to rename the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in Chambers County, Texas, as the "Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge." This move is intended to honor Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old whose life ended tragically in 2024.

In June 2024, Jocelyn was murdered in Houston, Texas. Two individuals alleged to be members of the Tren de Aragua gang have been charged with her death. Following this event, President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Order 14229 on March 5, 2025, directing that the refuge be renamed in her memory. The legislation introduced by Congressman Babin aims to make this change permanent.

"Jocelyn’s murder was a devastating reminder of the consequences of an unsecured border and the innocent lives lost as a result," said Babin. He added that renaming the refuge would honor Jocelyn's love for animals and ensure her spirit lives on in a place symbolizing peace and life.

Congressman Randy Weber expressed his support: "Southeast Texas—and our entire nation—will never forget Jocelyn Nungaray. Now, we have a beautiful place that will forever honor her memory and the life she was so cruelly robbed of."

The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is located near Houston and serves as a habitat for numerous species. It is also a popular destination for both Texans and visitors. Naming it after Jocelyn is seen as an appropriate tribute to her passion for animals and connection to Texas.

The bill has been sent to the House Committee on Natural Resources for further review.
