Yesterday, Congressman Wesley Hunt appeared before the House Ways and Means Committee to advocate for his proposed legislation, the POWER Act. The legislation aims to assist communities affected by natural disasters by providing a $500 tax credit for purchasing emergency home generators. Rep. Hunt seeks to include this act in the 2025 reconciliation tax package.
Houston, Texas, which is among the largest counties in the United States, experienced nearly eight weeks of power outages in 2024 due to several natural disasters. Rep. Hunt emphasized the need for affordable and reliable electricity access in such areas. He explained that the POWER Act would specify that only American-manufactured emergency generators qualify for the proposed tax credit.
Former President Trump expressed his support for Rep. Hunt's legislation. This endorsement followed a conversation between Trump and Hunt concerning the impact of Hurricanes Beryl and Helene. Trump highlighted the devastation in Houston and North Carolina, stating, "Last year, Houstonians endured a natural disaster that left them without power for 8 weeks. North Carolina was devastated by Hurricane Helene in September and is still in the dark. It’s past time for the federal government to step up and help Americans in crisis." Trump also encouraged the House Ways and Means Committee to consider the needs of communities affected by natural disasters during discussions on extending his Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
