Governor Greg Abbott has extended his congratulations to the City of McKinney for achieving the status of a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community in the inaugural year of the program. The designation, awarded by Travel Texas, came after McKinney completed an extensive certification process. This recognition underscores Visit McKinney's dedication to promoting tourism as a strategy for economic growth, job creation, and attracting more visitors both nationally and internationally.
Governor Abbott emphasized the significance of tourism to the state's economy, stating, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas. Travelers to and within Texas generate more than $193 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state." He also encouraged other Texas communities to seek similar certification to enhance local tourism and job opportunities.
Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell highlighted McKinney's unique offerings by saying, "There’s a genuine sense of place in McKinney that keeps visitors coming back. From hiking at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary to enjoying live music or savoring farm-to-table meals, the city offers a thoughtful mix of culture, nature, and hospitality." He noted that the designation acknowledges McKinney’s efforts to provide meaningful travel experiences.
Senator Brent Hagenbuch expressed his pride in McKinney, remarking, "This recognition celebrates the culture, community, and hospitality that make McKinney a standout destination in the Lone Star State." Representative Jeff Leach also added, "Anyone who’s spent time in McKinney understands why people keep coming back — it’s a place full of charm, rich character, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people you’ll meet."
Representative Matt Shaheen pointed out McKinney's historic downtown, while Mayor George Fuller noted, "Earning the Tourism Friendly Texas certification is a testament to our city's vibrant spirit, rich history, and commitment to welcoming visitors from near and far."
Visit McKinney Executive Director Aaron Werner highlighted the city's various certifications and its commitment to culture and community: "McKinney’s recognition as a Tourism Friendly Texas destination... underscores the diverse and dynamic experiences our city offers."
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program is available to local governments or nonprofits leading tourism promotion efforts. The certification benefits entities by helping to strengthen tourism-related relationships, educate leaders on tourism's importance, prioritize strategies, and avail opportunities offered by Travel Texas.
