Governor Greg Abbott has sent a letter to the City of San Marcos, opposing a proposed resolution that he criticizes as antisemitic and contradictory to Texas state law.

The letter states, "Israel is a stalwart ally of the United States and a friend to Texas... Texas will not tolerate antisemitism. Anti-Israel policies are anti-Texas policies." Abbott refers to actions he's taken, such as an executive order in higher education targeting antisemitism and legislation that prohibits state entities from participating in boycotts against Israel, emphasizing that it remains the law.

Abbott highlights San Marcos's obligation to certify adherence to state laws in its grant agreements with his office. The Governor's Office is reviewing San Marcos's active grants to assess any violations. If the resolution is passed, non-compliant grants will be promptly terminated.

Governor Abbott has implemented various measures to increase security and combat antisemitism in Texas due to threats against Israel and civilians from Hamas. Actions include allocating over $4 million in grants to Jewish organizations for security, increasing coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety and intelligence agencies, and issuing directives for state agencies against trade with Gaza or entities connected to Hamas. Texas flags have been ordered to half-staff to commemorate lives lost in the conflict, and educational efforts are underway to improve awareness among Texas students about the Israel-Hamas war.
