Governor Abbott appoints new members to Texas Medical Board for 2031

Governor Greg Abbott has announced several appointments to the Texas Medical Board, with terms set to expire on April 13, 2031. These appointees will contribute to the regulation of medical practice in Texas. Among those appointed is Mary “Kelly” Green, M.D., an eye surgeon from Marble Falls, known for her involvement with several medical organizations and her past volunteer work with the Peace Corps in West Africa.

Also appointed is Devinder S. Bhatia, M.D., a seasoned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon from Houston. Bhatia has over 25 years of experience and is affiliated with multiple prominent hospitals. Luisa del Rosal from Dallas, an entrepreneur and educator, has also been appointed. She is a columnist and serves as a teaching fellow and special advisor at Southern Methodist University.

James “JD” Distefano, D.O., a physician based in College Station, who is actively involved in sports medicine and has previously served in the United States Air Force, joins the board. Tomeka Herod, president of The Wilkins Group, Inc., and active in various organizations, is also among the appointees.

From Edinburg, Robert David Martinez, M.D., a hospitalist physician and medical director, has been appointed. He is recognized for his involvement in medical and community organizations. Jason K. Tibbels, M.D., a family physician and executive in virtual care, is the final appointee. He holds notable positions in medical innovation and quality care.

The appointments by Governor Abbott are pending confirmation by the Senate.
