Governor Greg Abbott has formally requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration in response to recent flooding in South Texas. In a communication sent to President Donald Trump, Abbott seeks Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid for Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties. Individuals in these regions could receive financial help for recovery if the request is approved.
Governor Abbott stated, "Due to severe flooding and extreme weather in South Texas that caused devastating damage across the region, I requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration. This Presidential Disaster Declaration will provide the critical financial assistance impacted communities need to recover and rebuild." Abbott urged Texans to report damages to help determine the need for further federal aid.
The initial request reflects the state's assessment following excessive rainfall and flooding. If approved, residents would be eligible for FEMA's Individual Assistance Program. This program covers temporary housing, emergency home repairs, and various personal property and service expenses. Additionally, it would enable access to FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program resources and the U.S. Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Program for affected counties.
Governor Abbott is working with local, state, and federal partners to support recovery efforts. These efforts include coordinating damage assessments, declaring state-level disasters, and activating emergency response resources.
