Governor Greg Abbott has declared April 2025 as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Texas. The proclamation was made in conjunction with World Autism Awareness Day. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) generally manifests in early childhood and can include challenges with social skills, relationships, and communication.
Governor Abbott emphasized, "Texas continues to promote the acceptance and celebration of people with disabilities, including Texans with autism. We must also foster a supportive environment where each individual across the autism spectrum can thrive." He further noted the impact of raising awareness, stating, "Autism awareness and acceptance empowers Texans throughout the state like Jeremiah Kimmel, a student with Autism who joined me at my State of the State Address, to feel included and supported."
Autism is reported as the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States, affecting one in 36 children. Increased acceptance is highlighted as a pathway to better employment opportunities, affordable housing, and accessible transportation.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will hold the 2025 Texas Autism Conference virtually from April 14-17, 2025. Those interested can contact Childrens.Autism.Program@hhs.texas.gov for more details.
The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities continues its mission to ensure those with disabilities experience full access to independent and productive lives. The committee advises on disability policies, supports related networks, and promotes awareness and compliance with disability laws.
