Governor Greg Abbott has revealed that the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) and its partners have not secured necessary approvals for construction from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). A letter from TCEQ informed EPIC and its affiliates that initiating construction without permits would breach state laws, urging them to verify that no construction has commenced.
"The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality found that the group behind the proposed EPIC compound did not submit the required permits to begin construction," Governor Abbott stated. He further warned, "They must confirm within seven days that they are immediately ceasing any construction of their illegal project or face the full weight of the law. The State of Texas will enforce its laws and protect our communities from unlawful actions or threats posed by EPIC or its affiliates."
In response, Governor Abbott emphasized Texas' commitment to law enforcement by highlighting ongoing investigations by various state agencies targeting EPIC and its affiliates. The Texas Rangers are examining potential criminal conduct, while the Texas Workforce Commission is probing potential violations of the Texas Fair Housing Act. The Texas State Securities Board is assessing risks of financial harm, and the Texas Funeral Service Commission has already demanded an immediate halt to unapproved funeral operations. Furthermore, the Attorney General of Texas is scrutinizing potential breaches of consumer protections.
Recently, the Governor disclosed that twelve state agencies are engaged in investigations into possible illegal activities by EPIC and its related entities.
