Governor Greg Abbott has revealed that the Texas Workforce Commission is conducting an investigation into the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) for alleged discrimination practices contrary to the Texas Fair Housing Act. This scrutiny is part of a broader examination involving multiple state agencies.
"Texas vigorously safeguards the freedoms granted to American citizens in the U.S. Constitution, including the freedom of religion," stated Governor Abbott. He further explained, "To that end, the Texas Workforce Commission opened an investigation into the group behind the proposed EPIC compound who are potentially breaking state fair housing laws by refusing to sell or rent housing to certain groups based on religion or other protected traits."
The actions against EPIC extend beyond just the Workforce Commission. Governor Abbott has detailed further investigations from other state bodies. The Texas State Securities Board is looking into potential financial misconduct affecting Texans. The Texas Funeral Service Commission has issued a cease-and-desist letter, urging EPIC to halt illegal funeral service operations immediately. Additionally, the Attorney General of Texas is probing EPIC for possible violations of the state's consumer protection laws.
The Governor had previously announced that over a dozen state agencies are now investigating EPIC and its connected entities for various alleged illegal activities.
