Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the closure of the Operation Lone Star jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County. The decision follows what Abbott describes as "President Donald Trump’s decisive and swift leadership on the border crisis" which has reportedly led to a significant decrease in illegal immigration.
Governor Abbott stated, "Thanks to President Trump, illegal border crossings are at all-time record lows and, unlike under President Joe Biden, the Trump Administration is quickly deporting illegal immigrants from our country." He further explained that this reduction in illegal border crossings has rendered the jail booking facility unnecessary. "As a result, there is no longer a need for Texas to maintain the jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County," Abbott added.
The state has already started winding down operations at the facility and plans to complete its closure by April. Additionally, Texas has offered the use of this facility to the Trump Administration to support ongoing border security efforts.
In 2022, Governor Abbott had initiated the opening of this facility as part of Operation Lone Star for detaining illegal immigrants arrested for border-related crimes in the area.
