Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to investigate an incident at Bellaire High School following allegations of educators attempting to "socially transition" a student without parental consent. This directive came after Representative Steve Toth brought the matter to Governor Abbott's attention.
In his communication with Representative Toth, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of parental rights in educational settings. "Parental rights are not stripped once a child enters a classroom," he stated. He expressed concern over schools potentially promoting "distorted notions of human biology" and furthering gender dysphoria among students. The governor stressed that if these allegations hold true, it would represent a significant violation of parental guarantees.
The TEA has commenced an investigation to ascertain whether any Bellaire High School staff acted against state laws designed to protect parental rights and prevent child abuse by socially transitioning a student without the parents' knowledge or approval.
Governor Abbott reiterated his stance from earlier this year, as mentioned in his State of the State Address, affirming that Texas recognizes only two genders — male and female. He asserted that educators discussing gender-transitioning with students should face termination. Additionally, President Donald Trump recently addressed Congress on similar concerns, describing secretive transitions by teachers as child abuse.
Under Texas law, professionals who interact directly with children must report any suspected child abuse or face potential criminal charges.
