Governor Greg Abbott addressed the Texas Pastors' Policy Conference in Austin, emphasizing the importance of school choice and its growing support among lawmakers.
"Our most important task this session is passing school choice," stated Governor Abbott. He stressed the need for parents to have options that align with their values and their children's specific needs. According to Abbott, "This is the first time in the history of Texas where we have a majority of the members of the Texas House of Representatives who are in favor of school choice." However, he noted that it is a narrow majority and urged Texans to take action to support this initiative.
Abbott acknowledged Speaker Dustin Burrows for backing a universal school choice program and highlighted Texas' homeschooling system as a means for parental control over education. He refuted claims by opponents that school choice would disrupt homeschooling opportunities.
The governor concluded by urging pastors and advocates present at the conference to actively support parent empowerment and reach out to legislators in favor of school choice.
