Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Kilgore has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This designation comes after Kilgore completed a multi-step certification process. The Music Friendly Texas program, initiated by TMO in 2016, aims to promote economic development and job creation related to the music industry in Texas.
"Congratulations to the City of Kilgore on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation," stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized that music is integral to Texas's identity and cultural traditions. According to Abbott, "Music Friendly Texas Communities work tirelessly to attract and develop the local music industry to boost local job creation and economic growth." He noted that with support from TMO, the Texas music industry provides 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31.7 billion annually in economic activity statewide.
Representative Jay Dean highlighted Kilgore's musical heritage: "This recognition is a testament to Kilgore's rich musical heritage." He expressed gratitude towards Governor Abbott and TMO for this designation which honors Kilgore's past while paving the way for future growth.
Mayor Ronnie Spradlin shared his pride in Kilgore's musical history: "Music is a unifying force that connects us all, and Kilgore is proud to be home to so many musical beginnings." He recounted notable figures like Rildia Bee Cliburn, Van Cliburn, Will Jennings, Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, and others who have contributed to Kilgore’s rich musical legacy.
Interim City Manager Rachel Rowe remarked on Kilgore’s diverse musical roots spanning classical, country, and blues genres: "Our rich musical legacy is alive and expanding in Kilgore."
Visit Kilgore Tourism Manager Megan Payne described becoming a Music Friendly Texas Community as a significant milestone: "This recognition showcases the vibrant music scene we have here."
The certification ceremony will take place on March 11 during a City Council meeting in Kilgore. TMO Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Gini Mascorro will present the designation.
Kilgore now joins 76 other communities as part of this program. The TMO continues its mission since 1990 of fostering economic development within the state's music sector through initiatives like these certifications.
