Governor Abbott activates emergency response for wildfire risk in West Texas

Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate additional state emergency response resources in anticipation of critical wildfire dangers and severe weather threats expected across various regions of Texas. The decision comes as West Texas faces increased wildfire risks, while North and East Texas are bracing for potential severe storms.

"As the state faces increased wildfire risks in West Texas and potential severe storms in North and East Texas, Texas stands ready to swiftly deploy additional emergency response resources to communities that may be impacted," stated Governor Abbott. He urged residents in affected areas to take precautions, highlighting the importance of limiting activities that could cause sparks or flames due to dry conditions and sustained winds.

The Texas A&M Forest Service has reported optimal conditions for fast-moving wildfires across several regions including the Panhandle, South Plains, Concho Valley, Big Country, Permian Basin, Far West, Hill Country, and parts of North, Central, and South Texas. Consequently, the Wildland Fire Preparedness Level has been raised to Level 3.

In addition to monitoring wildfire threats, TDEM and other agencies are closely watching for severe weather impacts on northern and eastern parts of the state this week. The National Weather Service forecasts an increased threat of tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall causing flash flooding.

To address these challenges effectively, Governor Abbott's directive includes deploying over 200 firefighters from the Texas A&M Forest Service along with firefighting aircraft such as large air tankers and helicopters equipped for firefighting.
