Governor Greg Abbott has officially declared March 2025 as Women's History Month in Texas. The proclamation honors the significant contributions of women across various sectors, including public service, philanthropy, education, and entrepreneurship.
Abbott highlighted the impact of women's ingenuity and determination on society, stating that many have "risked their fortunes and reputations to build a prosperous future," which is now a source of pride for the state. He acknowledged notable figures such as Jane Long, Angelina Eberly, Clara Driscoll, Adina de Zavala, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Oveta Culp Hobby, Mary Kay Ash, Ninfa Laurenzo, and Barbara Jordan for their exceptional contributions.
The observance aligns with International Women's Day first celebrated in 1911. In 1980, President Carter proclaimed the first week of March as National Women’s History Week. Congress extended this to a month-long celebration in 1987.
Governor Abbott encouraged Texans to explore women's historical achievements to inspire future leaders: "At this time, I encourage all Texans to learn more about the accomplishments of women throughout history as we inspire the next generation of Texas women leaders."
Abbott's proclamation urges residents to commemorate Women's History Month with suitable ceremonies and activities throughout March.
