Governor Greg Abbott, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard, continues efforts to secure the border in partnership with the Trump Administration. The multi-agency initiative known as Operation Lone Star has resulted in over 531,500 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 51,000 criminal arrests, including over 43,700 felony charges. In addition to addressing immigration issues, law enforcement has seized more than 625 million lethal doses of fentanyl.
Governor Abbott emphasized on social media that a recent operation at Colony Ridge led to 118 arrests with assistance from DPS troopers and federal agencies. He stated that "Texas will continue to partner with the Trump Administration in homeland and border security operations."
Further showcasing these efforts, Governor Abbott shared images of joint patrols conducted by DPS troopers, Texas National Guard soldiers, and Border Patrol agents. He praised the ongoing collaboration aimed at securing the border.
A report from McAllen, Texas highlighted how increased border security measures under President Trump's policies have led to a decline in illegal crossings. During a ride-along with NBC 5's Scott Friedman, Lieutenant Chris Olivarez noted that cartels have increased smuggling fees due to decreased attempts at illegal entry.
In Uvalde County, DPS K-9 units successfully located illegal immigrants hiding on private property. K-9 Bona and her handler tracked multiple individuals over several miles across ranches.
Meanwhile, a traffic stop in Webb County resulted in the seizure of marijuana valued at $60,000. The driver was arrested for felony possession of marijuana as investigations continue.
In Hidalgo County, two criminal illegal immigrants were apprehended after discharging a firearm. Hugo Alberto Lopez Herrera attempted to evade arrest while his accomplice interfered with law enforcement officers during their duties.
Additionally, technology such as drones is playing an essential role in interdiction efforts along the Rio Grande River. A drone team recently assisted Border Patrol and Texas National Guard units in arresting two individuals attempting illegal entry into Texas.
Training initiatives also continue to enhance capabilities at the border. Over 300 Texas National Guard soldiers completed specialized training under U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance. Operating under Title 8 authority allows these soldiers expanded roles in supporting law enforcement activities along the southern border.
Sergeant 1st Class Alfredo Moreno commented on this development: "I believe that we have made an impact not only for the safety of Texas but [for] the entire United States." The focus remains on strengthening security measures through comprehensive legal frameworks outlined by Title 8.
