The University of Houston recently marked the 10th anniversary of its Student Centers. This milestone celebrates both the renovation of Student Center South and the construction of Student Center North, which reopened in 2015 following an $80 million restoration. The centers now function as a key gathering spot for students and visitors alike.
Originally opened in 1967 as the University Center, Student Center South featured a ballroom with a capacity of 1,200 people, along with a cafeteria and snack bar. Over time, these centers have adapted to better meet the needs of UH's expanding community.
To commemorate this decade-long journey, UH organized events that included t-shirt giveaways and UH-themed cupcakes. Additionally, a time capsule was created to hold memorabilia and messages from current students to be unveiled in 2035.
Eve Esch, who coordinated the anniversary celebration and serves as executive director of Student Centers, emphasized their significance: “The Student Centers are the heart and living room of the campus, providing a central hub for student life," she explained. "They serve as spaces where students can relax, socialize, study and connect with each other.”
Esch further elaborated on her experiences working at the centers: “It’s incredible to witness how the spaces foster connections and personal growth," she said. These interactions occur through various activities such as events that inspire passion or jobs that equip students with professional skills.
Since its inception in 1927, UH has seen its student centers evolve through different eras while maintaining community focus at their core. Looking ahead, plans are underway to expand Student Center North by adding new facilities and enhancing services for student organizations.
