Mary Gould, the Director of Registration and Academic Records at the C. T. Bauer College of Business, marked a significant milestone in December by celebrating 49 years at the University of Houston (UH). Throughout her career, Gould has been a dedicated adviser and advocate for students from diverse backgrounds.
Gould's journey with UH began in December 1975 when she responded to a newspaper advertisement for a role in graduate admissions. Her skills and enthusiasm quickly became evident, leading her to transition to the C. T. Bauer College of Business within six months, where she found her passion for student advising.
"The opportunity to talk to students, to help them see that there’s many ways to reach their goals, has always felt incredibly rewarding," Gould said.
In her advisory role, Gould has assisted students with academic planning and overcoming personal challenges. She recalls assisting students with manual registration processes during her early years at UH, which involved carrying paper forms but allowed direct interaction with students.
"Some students often don’t have a role model in their home or in their group of friends that can help them see that college isn’t an obstacle," she said.
Gould has significantly contributed to the Jesse H. Jones Business Leadership Development Program since its inception in 1992. The program offers scholarships and support to first-generation students facing financial challenges.
"I enjoy finding ways that can help students," she stated. Through various initiatives like workshops and mentorships, Gould aids these students in building confidence and skills necessary for success.
Over nearly five decades at UH, Gould witnessed many changes on campus, including memorable moments like when the university had a live cougar mascot.
"The Cougar Guard would walk the cougar around campus... It was such a memorable sight," she recalled fondly.
Reflecting on her long tenure at UH, Gould attributes her motivation to colleagues and students who are committed to helping others succeed.
"Everyone at UH is so helpful and collaborative... I feel a connection to the new generation of students," she shared. "While I’m getting older, the students always seem to stay the same age."
Her commitment continues as each student's journey serves as a reminder of why she loves her work—a legacy that will influence lives well into the future.
