The City of Houston, led by Mayor John Whitmire, in collaboration with Houston Habitat for Humanity, will join global Habitat for Humanity organizations to honor President Jimmy Carter's contributions to the organization and its homeowners over nearly four decades.
Houston Habitat plans to raise a wall with a door as a symbol of the opportunities President Carter helped create through his service. The public is invited to sign the wall and door with their names or personal messages as a tribute.
The memorial event will take place on Tuesday, January 7th from 11 a.m. to noon at the Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza at the Houston Public Library Downtown. Media access begins at 9 a.m., while public viewing and signing are available from noon to 6 p.m. on January 7th and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 8th and 9th.
Participants include Mayor John Whitmire, Allison Hay (CEO of Houston Habitat for Humanity), Pierce Bush (CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star), and homeowner Cindy Ramos.
Houston Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent housing through new home construction, rehabilitation, disaster repair, infrastructure development, neighborhood revitalization, and helping families become homeowners. Since Hurricane Harvey, they have repaired over 800 homes for families lacking resources.
