Americans hold dear the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A significant threat to these rights is human trafficking, affecting around 25 million individuals annually.

Human trafficking involves sexual exploitation or forced labor and is widely regarded as a modern form of slavery. Combating this issue is a shared responsibility that requires understanding warning signs, recognizing the urgent need for action, and supporting rescue efforts.

Law enforcement agencies collaborate with private organizations and statewide entities on prevention initiatives to protect vulnerable populations and prosecute traffickers. Although progress has been made through these efforts, there is still much work needed to eradicate human trafficking.

Each year, January is dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and honoring the organizations, government agencies, and law enforcement officials who are working towards its end. Texans are encouraged to educate themselves about the dangers and indicators of human trafficking and take action against it.

Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed January 2025 as Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Texas. He urges all Texans "to observe the occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities."

"In testimony whereof," he states, "I have hereunto affixed my signature this the 13th day of December, 2024."
