Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz has announced the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) through the Senate. The legislation, which she co-sponsored, is now awaiting President Biden's signature to become law after its approval by the Senate this month. It had previously passed in the House on November 12th.

The Social Security Fairness Act aims to repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). These policies have been criticized for reducing Social Security benefits for public service employees like teachers and first responders who also earned additional benefits through part-time work or other careers. The repeal is intended to ensure retirees receive their full entitled benefits.

“For too long, public servants—our teachers, police officers, and firefighters—have been penalized for dedicating their lives to serving our communities,” said Congresswoman De La Cruz. “Listening to teachers and public employees in my district, I understood the inequities they faced. That’s why I co-sponsored this legislation early in my tenure, and the bill’s passage reflects our commitment to fairness and respect for those who serve. This is a victory for fairness and justice, and I am thrilled to see the hard work of so many finally come to fruition.”
