Cynthia Requena Renteria, a first-grade teacher at Benbrook Elementary School, has been recognized as this week's HISD Star Educator. Over the past year, Requena and her colleagues have enhanced their teaching skills and adopted new learning strategies in the classroom.
In her capacity as a bilingual teacher and instructional leader, Requena focuses on supporting her students' varying levels of English proficiency. She achieves this by implementing differentiated instruction and leading engaging lessons. "Every single class, at the end, I really know who needs more help, who achieved the learning goals, who is ready for the next lesson—this is really good for us," said Requena.
Requena's favorite subjects in school were reading and writing. As a first-grade teacher, she finds great satisfaction in witnessing her students' daily improvements in these areas. She celebrates every step of progress they make, particularly as they develop into confident writers.
Reflecting on her time with HISD, Requena shared a memorable moment: "I have many wonderful memories, but one stands out: our parade around the school neighborhood at the end of the COVID school year. I’ll never forget my students proudly holding their posters with thankful messages. It was such a special moment of connection and celebration."
For this school year, Requena aims to build strong connections with her students and help them discover their unique talents. Looking ahead to the holiday season, she cherishes spending time with her husband and son. "The best part of the holidays for me is spending time with my husband and son. I am incredibly grateful to have them in my life, and I enjoy every moment we get to share together."
