Alvaro Montelongo, Jr., principal of Scarborough High School, is making significant strides in his second year of transformation at the school. Previously, Montelongo served as principal at Berry Elementary School, where he improved the school's rating from a C to a high-B. His leadership and instructional coaching resulted in academic growth across all grades and a 100% teacher retention rate.
Montelongo's efforts have consistently turned around lower-performing campuses within the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Reflecting on his career, Montelongo shared that his favorite subject in school was math. He recalled his first year as a principal at Looscan Elementary during the 2018-2019 school year when the school's TEA rating increased from 66 to 88. This achievement marked the highest score among HISD Achieve 180 campuses.
He expressed pride in this accomplishment: "It was great for the students, faculty, staff, and parents to not have the label of a TEA ‘F’ rating!" Montelongo also highlighted his appreciation for Houston's diversity: "I love the diversity of our city and District!"
Looking ahead, Montelongo has set an ambitious goal for Scarborough High School: "Our goal for this school year is to achieve a TEA ‘A’ rating!"
