The City of Houston has announced the postponement of this week's consolidated council meeting to Thursday, November 14, in order to accommodate funeral arrangements for firefighter Marcelo Garcia. The public session originally scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, and the meeting on Wednesday, November 13, will not take place.
The consolidated council meeting is being held in observance of Veterans Day and will commence at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Firefighter Garcia tragically lost his life while combating a warehouse fire in Greater East End on November 6.
Garcia began his service with the Houston Fire Department (HFD) in 2015 and was assigned to Station 23 located off Lawndale Street in Southeast Houston for the past six years. He also served at Stations 9, 26, and 29 during his career.
A public viewing will be held for Garcia on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. His funeral service is set for Wednesday at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Mayor John Whitmire has asked residents and commuters to turn on their vehicle headlights on Wednesday as a tribute to Garcia's service.
