Mayor John Whitmire has announced a significant pay increase and new incentives for Houston Police Department cadets, aiming to enhance recruitment and retention efforts. During a visit with Cadet Class #267, alongside Police Chief J. Noe Diaz, the mayor revealed a $10,000 raise for police cadets.

"This is an investment in the men and women of our police department who put their lives on the line daily to keep our community safe," stated Mayor Whitmire. He emphasized the importance of attracting individuals from across Texas and beyond to join the Houston police force.

Effective immediately, officers will see their salaries rise to $62,574 upon completing their probationary period. This initiative marks Mayor Whitmire's first address to cadets during training, although he has attended several graduations previously.

Class #267 consists of 46 cadets set to graduate in March 2026. The fiscal year 2025 budget includes funding for six police cadet classes.

Mayor Whitmire encouraged current cadets to aid in recruiting new officers and stressed prioritizing community relations. "I hope you recommend somebody else to join this fine organization because the better days are in front of us," he said. The mayor also highlighted his vision for law enforcement: "The model we want in Houston is law enforcement that protects the public, protects yourself, and your family."
