Roll Call
A regular meeting of the Houston City Council was held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Mayor John Whitmire presiding with Council Members Amy Peck, Abbie Kamin, Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Fred Flickinger, Tiffany D. Thomas, Mary Nan Huffman, Mario Castillo, Joaquin Martinez, Edward Pollard, Martha Castex-Tatum, Julian Ramirez, Willie Davis, Leticia Plummer and Sallie Alcorn, Randy Zamora, Legal Department, and Marta Crinejo, Agenda Director, present. Council Member Tarsha Jackson absent on personal business. Council Member Twila Carter out of the City on City business.
At 1:35 p.m., Mayor John Whitmire called the meeting to order and recognized Council Member Kamin for a proclamation.
Proclamations:
Council Members Kamin and Evans-Shabazz (joined by Council Member Peck, who is Chair of Public Safety Committee) presented a proclamation to the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC). Accepting the proclamation were Emilee Dawn Whitehurst, President & CEO of HAWC; Sonia Corrales, Deputy CEO, Chair members, staff and other members of the Board.
Council Member Kamin presented a proclamation to Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) commemorating their Home Safe Home Gala and their 44 years of service to the community. Accepting the proclamation were Maisha Colter, Chief Executive Officer, her team and joined by Lee Vela, Vice President of Public Affairs at Clear Channel Outdoors.
Mayor Whitmire presented the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Award in Arts in the Community to Elva Trevino, founder of the Houston Celebrity Entertainment and Arts Soiree.
Mayor Whitmire presented the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award to Irma Diaz-Gonzalez, President/CEO of Employment & Training Centers, Inc.
Mayor Whitmire presented the Mayor’s Education in the Community Award to Elvia Martinez, founder and leader at the Texas Technical Trade School.
