Houstonians for Great Public Schools (Houston GPS) is among several civic organizations urging Houston residents to support the Houston Independent School District's (HISD) Proposition A and Proposition B, which are set for a vote in the November 5 election.

According to an October 24 press release from Houston GPS, the education non-profit organization and others have issued a public letter encouraging registered voters to vote "yes" on the $4.4 billion bond. The bond aims to address issues such as mold and lead in the city's public schools, enhance security measures, improve HVAC systems, and expand pre-kindergarten programs.

Houston GPS has partnered with six other entities—BakerRipley, Greater Houston Partnership, Children at Risk, Good Reason Houston, Ed Trust, and Houston Region Business Coalition—to highlight that HISD, Texas’s largest public school district, has not sought voter approval for a school bond for elementary and middle schools in nearly two decades.

The release indicates that approximately 82 campuses, or one-third of the district’s schools, have shown elevated lead levels in their water. Veronica Garcia, Executive Director of Houston GPS, emphasized in the release that the bond package is not a referendum on the state takeover or HISD administration.
