HISD honors Dr. Luis Landa as star educator for leadership achievements

Dr. Luis Landa, who has been recognized as the HISD Star Educator for this week, served as the principal of Sharpstown International High School for two years before taking on the role of Executive Director of Feeder for HISD’s West Division. During his tenure at Sharpstown, he facilitated significant achievement growth and is known for his dedication to students and staff. He believes that everyone at Sharpstown has the potential for greatness.

Sharpstown International High School has a student body where most are English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, speaking various languages at home. The school has an accountability rating of a high B, attributed in part to Landa's leadership.

Landa began his educational career with HISD as a science teacher at McReynolds Middle School and later held positions such as teacher specialist at Henry Middle School, assistant principal at Austin High School, and principal roles at Sutton Elementary and Chavez High School.

His academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston.

Reflecting on his experiences with HISD, Landa shared: "I have so many wonderful memories in HISD surrounding feeling impactful and making a difference with student achievement." He also emphasized graduation ceremonies as particularly memorable moments.

Regarding Houston's diversity, Landa expressed appreciation: "I love the diversity of cultures, food, arts, and sports." He values sharing these experiences with his family.

Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, Landa stated: "My goal for students and staff is always that they grow, both in knowledge and as people."
