Bettina McKinney, the principal of Highland Heights Elementary School, has been recognized as this week’s HISD Star Educator for her leadership and dedication. Under her guidance, the school has seen significant improvements in student performance over the past three years.

McKinney's efforts have led to more than a 20% increase in math and science scores at Highland Heights, a New Education System (NES) campus. Her approach includes on-the-spot instructional coaching and close collaboration with her administrative staff to enhance classroom instruction quality.

McKinney stated that her mission is not complete until all students are performing at or above grade level. She is committed to fostering a culture of growth at the school.

McKinney holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Lamar University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of St. Thomas. She began her career at HISD’s Dogan Elementary School, eventually becoming assistant principal there. She has also worked in teaching roles at Patterson Elementary, Whidby Elementary, and Key Middle School.

In an interview, McKinney shared some personal insights:

Favorite subject in school: Writing & Debate.

Favorite book: The Bible.

Favorite thing about Houston: The diversity of cultures and the abundant number of experiences the city provides.

Goal for your students and staff this upcoming school year: "The goal for my students and staff is to make visible instructional progress daily. Each day should be better than the day before."
