The School of Theatre & Dance at the University of Houston’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts, under newly appointed director Sharon Ott, has announced its 2024-25 season featuring 11 productions.

“Fefu and Her Friends” presented in 2023-24“Our season offers an exhilarating range of productions featuring the best of contemporary American drama, a classic play by William Shakespeare, a devised theatre piece and an exciting collaboration with the UH Athletic Department,” Ott said. “All productions feature the work of our talented undergraduate and graduate student actors, designers and stage managers.”

The season begins in September with the “Circadian Project,” a storytelling event created by the incoming MFA Acting cohort within just over 100 hours of rehearsal.

Next is “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark,” directed by UH alumna ShaWanna Renee Rivon. This comedy examines racial stereotypes in Hollywood through the story of Vera Stark, an African American maid and budding actress.

In November, “Everybody” will be staged at Quintero Theatre. This modern adaptation of the 15th-century morality play “Everyman” explores themes related to life and death.

Also in November, “Safe at Home” will take place at Schroeder Park. Directed by Jack Reuler with support from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, this production examines U.S. immigration policies against a World Series Game Seven backdrop.

“Theater is based on conflict that has some sort of resolution that leads you to feel, behave or think differently about the world in which you live,” said Reuler. “That’s what any sports competition does.”

Sage Mitchell's debut play "Everything Rises" will also be featured this fall. It explores queer love and small-town life amid growing tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights.

“As a young playwright, I feel very lucky and excited to work with an amazing team of artists and educators supporting me as ‘Everything Rises’ comes to life for the first time,” said Mitchell.

The fall concludes with Teresa Chapman directing Emerging Choreographers Showcase which highlights new works from UH dancers and choreographers.

Spring opens in February with William Shakespeare’s “All’s Well That Ends Well.” Following this is Jen Silverman's "The Moors," a black comedy that subverts Gothic romance expectations.

March features UH Ensemble Dance Works showcasing original dance pieces performed by UH Dance Ensemble members.

“It’s a chance for our students to engage with diverse creative voices and grow as artists,” Chapman noted.

April brings Aaron Posner’s “Stupid F*cking Bird,” directed by Brandon Weinbrenner—a modern adaptation exploring artistic pretension—and concludes with the fourteenth annual 10-Minute Play Festival showcasing new works from BFA playwriting students.

“I am excited by our UH season titles and directors," said Adam Noble, head of MFA acting program. "We strive to create a season that will edify and challenge our burgeoning artists."
