Organizations across the city are mobilizing to provide essential resources such as backpacks, school supplies, immunizations, and food to families in need for the 2024-2025 school year. The first day of school for HISD is Monday, August 12.
Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest
Date: Aug. 3, 2024

Location: George R. Brown Convention Center (1001 Avenida De Las Americas, 77010)
About: Partnering with Shell, the Houston Mayor’s Office is hosting the Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest to assist economically disadvantaged Houston-area families in preparing their elementary students for school. The event will feature on-site health, dental, and vision screenings, immunizations, and other social services. Additionally, 25,000 backpacks with school supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
NHC’s Back to School Bash
Date: Aug. 3, 2024

Location: Little York Villas (3111 Little York Rd., 77091)
About: Natural Head Corp. will offer food, face-painting, children’s activities, and more. Complimentary school supplies will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Back to School Carnival
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Buckner Children and Family Services of Houston (8600 Sweetwater Ln., 77037)
About: Buckner CFSH is offering food, music, and fun at their annual back-to-school carnival. Attending school-aged children will receive a free backpack along with shoes and socks.
Back to School Birth Certificate Event
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Chimney Rock Annex (6000 Chimney Rock Rd., 77081)
About: The Harris County Clerk’s Office is providing assistance in obtaining birth certificates needed for school registration. The first 100 people in line will receive one birth certificate free of charge; additional certificates will be available for $23 each.
HISD Back to School Resource Fair & Backpack Giveaway

About:HISD will offer free community health resources and an informational resource fair showcasing resources available to HISD students and their families.Free backpacks and school supplies will also be provided while supplies last.No registration required.
