Mayor John Whitmire has announced plans to appoint Vonn Tran as the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Director, pending city council confirmation on Wednesday, July 17.

Tran brings over 20 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry. Her leadership skills are well-regarded for uniting opposing parties to reach consensus and effectively respond to customers. Tran's background includes knowledge of Special Districts such as Management Districts, TIRZs, and MUDs, and their role in development and redevelopment. She also possesses expertise in how regulations impact development and neighborhoods.

As Planning Director, Tran will oversee the implementation of ordinances affecting development and neighborhoods. She will lead transportation planning, collaborate with the Planning Commission, Houston Archeological and Historical Commission, and Tower Commission, while streamlining operations for efficiency.

"Vonn Tran has the education and experience to lead the Planning Department. I am grateful that she wants to contribute to the success of the City of Houston through public service after a successful private sector career. She will bring transparency and a new perspective on putting the public first, providing a positive experience, and building long-term relationships," said Mayor Whitmire.

Tran holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and an MBA from Bauer College of Business with a focus in finance. She is a Leadership Houston Class XXI graduate, a licensed Texas Real Estate Broker, and a Certified Commercial Investment Member.

"I am grateful for Mayor Whitmire's confidence in me to lead the Planning Department. I look forward to working collaboratively for the good of Houston," said Tran.
