As the school year comes to an end, seniors at Houston Independent School District (HISD) are not only gearing up for exams, prom and graduation, but also preparing for life beyond high school. Recognizing their potential and the exciting futures that lie ahead, HISD has awarded the Superintendent Scholars Award to a distinguished senior from each high school. In addition, an extra honor was given to the top 10 students personally selected by the Superintendent.
The seventh annual Superintendent Scholars Awards commenced with a luncheon for the students and their nominators - either their principals or a representative from their campus. The nominees were chosen based on their resilience and strength in overcoming personal adversity.
Lynnetra Johnson, Coordinator 2 with HISD’s College, Career and Military Readiness Advising Department said, “Not every student is perfect or has a perfect journey. I believe that we have to acknowledge those that have actually struggled, and still persevered throughout their high school years. This is one way that we can push them forward and show them that we are very proud of the accomplishments that they have made.”
Each nominated senior received a $1,000 scholarship to support their post-secondary education. The top 10 scholars were awarded an additional $500 and a new laptop.
Senior Alberto “Beto” Ramirez commented on the significance of this award saying, “This award is important because it shows how much kids have been through and how they’re still here, striving, working, putting school first.” Ramirez is a highly respected student at Waltrip High School who credits his perseverance to dealing with his father's recent passing.
The Top 10 Superintendent Scholars Award winners include Linh Le from Westbury High School; Munachi Muoghalu from Sharpstown International High School; Yunior Robles Mesa from Liberty High School; Abigail Matthews from Heights High School; Kavien Bertrand from High School for Law and Justice; Jonathan Vasquez from Carnegie Vanguard High School; Alberto Ramirez from Waltrip High School; Brielle Grant from North Forest High School; Christian Rogers from Sterling High School, and Taylor Spiller from Energy Institute High School.
