As Mental Health Awareness Month begins in May, experts are raising concerns about the declining state of mental health in society. Rheeda Walker, a psychology professor at the University of Houston specializing in mental health and suicide prevention, expressed alarm at the current situation, stating, “The overall mental health of our society seems to be declining, and it’s alarming.”

According to a nationwide survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Psychological Association, adults ages 18 to 34 reported the highest rate of mental illnesses at 50% in 2023. Additionally, adults ages 35 to 44 experienced a significant increase in mental health diagnoses, with 45% reporting a mental illness in 2023 compared to 31% in 2019.

In Texas, where Walker is based, the situation is also concerning, with 1 in 3 residents experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety. Walker's research has also highlighted the heightened risk faced by people of color, particularly in the Black community, due to the discrimination they endure.

Walker emphasized the importance of reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, stating, “We must work harder to reduce the stigma associated with mental health. There continues to be too much resistance to understanding and addressing mental health in our broader society.”

As society grapples with these challenges, Walker advised individuals to focus on building their own resilience. She highlighted the significance of being aware of one's mental state and making necessary adjustments to avoid burnout. Walker stressed the importance of recognizing one's limits, stating, “It’s good to recognize you’re at the point of burnout. But the flex, is to stop getting to that point!”

Rheeda Walker, who has published extensively on African American mental health, suicide risk, and emotional resilience, is known for debunking myths about mental health and providing practical advice for everyday life. Her work has been recognized in various media outlets and platforms.

For those in crisis, support is available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers confidential support to individuals in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Live chat support is also available for those in need.

In light of Mental Health Awareness Month, Walker's insights serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health challenges and promoting well-being in society.
