Brays Oaks Management District Business & Economic Development Committee met March 6.

The Brays Oaks Management District Business and Economic Development Committee held a meeting via Zoom video conference on March 6, 2024, at 10:00 am.

District Board and Committee members present: Sheri Cortez, Ralph Rieger, Marsha Fisk, Sylvia Rivas

Staff members present: Xavier Herrera, Josh Hawes, Cosme Garcia, Alan Bernstein Public present: Sylvester L. (Skip) Reeder III, Brenda Jackson, Shavonnah Roberts Schreiber – SNR Creative, Carolina Gambrel – SNR Creative, Cynthia Demery, Vinitha Vasudevan – India House, Marcy Williams

Committee Chair Sheri Cortez called the meeting to order at 10:01 AM, and the committee meeting adjourned at 10:47 AM.

a. No public comments were received.

3. Minutes of 2/07/24 B&ED Committee Meeting

a. Committee meeting minutes submitted for reference.

4. District Updates & Recommendations

a. Development Properties

i. Executive Director Herrera updated the committee regarding Brays Oaks Crossing.

ii. Committee Chair Cortez gave an update regarding the Brays Oaks Crossing groundbreaking and some of the infrastructure issues the developer is working on.

iii. Committee Chair Cortez advised that a retail space will be going in near Ruffino and W. Bellfort.

iv. Committee Chair Cortez gave an update on 7600 W. Airport. The owner of the property has agreed to clean up the property.

b. Ruffino Redevelopment

i. Mr. Reeder gave an update on behalf of Houston One Voice regarding a technical assistance grant opportunity his organization has applied for.

c. Branding – SNR Creative

i. Ms. Gambrel advised that SNR is working through task order 4 which includes a 2024 brochure and Brays Oaks MD welcome packet. Items should be available for review by the next committee meeting.

d. Permits & Platting

1. Permits

a. Executive Director Herrera reported the number of residential and commercial permits for the month of February.

2. Platting

a. Executive Director Herrera reported no new platting activity for the month of February.

e. Business PIP

i. Committee Chair Cortez advised that she is working with HPD on a meeting that will focus on providing resources to area business owners to address issues of theft and loitering, for example. The event will be an hour and will be at S. Gessner station.

ii. Committee Chair Cortez advised that Director Herndon is also working to bring small business resources.

iii. Committee Chair Cortez advised that the district is working to hold a business community mixer with MPT Castex-Tatum and law enforcement representatives. 

f. Business Incentives Program

i. Executive Director Herrera advised he is working with D-BAT management to schedule a time to present them with a certificate of recognition.
