HISD counselors were recognized and celebrated during the 2024 Counselors’ Appreciation Meeting held at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. The event, which took place from February 5-9, coincided with National School Counseling Week, a time dedicated to appreciating the invaluable contributions of school counselors.

Superintendent Mike Miles emphasized the significance of counseling services, stating, "One of the areas in our profession in our country that we continue to struggle with is counseling services." He acknowledged the challenges that students face, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlighted the importance of skilled professionals who can provide support in various areas.

Twiana Collier, an Education Specialist with Region 4 and a 29-year educator, served as the emcee for the meeting. Collier shared her personal experience and how her school counselor at Yates High School positively influenced her life trajectory. She expressed gratitude to her fellow counselors, saying, "Thank you so much for the impact that you are making."

During the event, several counselors were invited to share success stories and best practices. Haileigh Pettigrew from River Oaks Elementary, Freddy Viafara from Berry Elementary, Talitha Pinkney from Lovett Elementary, and Erica Scott from Chavez High School all shared their experiences. Talitha Pinkney, in particular, was recognized as the 2023 Elementary School Counselor of the Year.

In addition to celebrating individual achievements, HISD honored counselors who have provided multiple years of service. The district also recognized Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) winners. These counselors underwent a rigorous application process to advocate for student support programs on their respective campuses.

The Counselors’ Appreciation Meeting included raffle prizes and surprises for the attendees. It served as a platform to express gratitude and admiration for the hard work and dedication of HISD counselors. Superintendent Miles summed up the importance of their role, stating, "We need to make sure that we’re valuing their skills and honoring what they do."
