U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and 150 other Republicans have sent a letter to President Biden criticizing his de facto ban on American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. Led by Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), the lawmakers argue that this decision not only jeopardizes the stability and affordability of natural gas domestically but also hurts the American economy, undercuts allies, and strengthens adversaries.

In the letter, the lawmakers express their concern about the announcement that the Department of Energy (DOE) will indefinitely stop issuing permits to export LNG while conducting a 'public interest' review. They argue that this review is unnecessary and economically and strategically dangerous. The DOE has consistently found that U.S. LNG exports serve the public interest by contributing positive economic benefits, strengthening energy security, and potentially reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

The lawmakers conclude by stating that policies supporting LNG exports will grow the economy, create good paying jobs, and strengthen the energy security of allies. They urge President Biden to end the unnecessary review and promptly approve all pending applications to increase the global supply of natural gas.

Background information reveals that on January 26, President Biden froze the approval process for new and pending U.S. LNG export sites. This decision prioritizes the wishes of radical activists over U.S. energy security and the security of allies. Studies suggest that LNG exports could significantly benefit the U.S. economy, adding approximately $73 billion by 2040, creating around 453,000 American jobs, and increasing U.S.-held purchasing power by $30 billion. Additionally, over the past seven years, the U.S. has successfully increased its LNG export capacity while maintaining stable and affordable natural gas prices.

The actions taken by President Biden are concerning as they may weaken global energy security, hinder investment in American energy, and jeopardize U.S. energy leadership.
