Roger "Bo" Quiroga, a former mayor of Galveston, located approximately 50 miles southeast of Houston, has passed away. Quiroga, who led Galveston during the early years of the 21st century, died at the age of 70 on January 14.
Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston will reportedly manage funeral services for Quiroga, according to Legacy.com. The Galveston County Daily News reported that Quiroga had been battling colon cancer for an unspecified period. Despite his health crisis, he made one last bid for Galveston's highest office but lost to retired pediatric dentist Dr. Craig Brown.
According to the same source, Quiroga's impact on Ball High School was significant. As a young man, he led the Tors to prominence and later crafted a minor league baseball career within the Philadelphia Phillies farm system. It is reported that Quiroga expressed his support for both the Houston Astros and the Phillies during their clash in the 2022 World Series.
In spring 2023, KTRK News, a Houston ABC affiliate, reported that the Galveston Independent School District renamed the Tornadoes’ stadium after Quiroga in recognition of his contributions to the program. According to KTRK, Quiroga described this honor as "the top of the pinnacle" aside from starting his own family.
