The city of Houston has announced that Tetra Tech, a leading provider of consulting and engineering services, has honored Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston city council with the annual Francisco Sanchez Public Service Award. This accolade recognizes their efforts in managing the city's recovery following Hurricane Harvey.
In acknowledging the successful recovery of Houston, it was highlighted that this was a collaborative effort. Chief Recovery Officer Stephen Costello, Finance Department Deputy Director Arif Rasheed, and local subcontractors were all commended for their crucial contributions. The Tetra Tech Francisco Sanchez Public Service Award was established in 2022 to annually honor individuals who have shown exceptional efforts during or after disasters. According to a press release by the city of Houston, John Buri, Tetra Tech's Director of Post Disaster Programs, presented the award during the Dec. 6th city council meeting.
Buri stated: "Through their diligence and hard work, they have secured a total of $600 million in federal funds to increase resilience to future disasters, including the $350 million received for rebuilding damaged properties and infrastructure." He added that "The strong case they made to FEMA enabled them to attain additional funding needed for major renovations to the municipal courts building."
Mayor Turner expressed his gratitude for the recognition and spoke about his team's efforts: "We worked together as a team to build a stronger, more sustainable, and more resilient city after Harvey," he said. "During my eight years as mayor, Houston has faced seven federally declared disasters - from floods, a historic freeze, a pandemic and more. We always responded quickly to ensure our infrastructure was rebuilt and residents, especially the most vulnerable, would not be left behind. The City of Houston is grateful to be the recipient of this award."
Tetra Tech was established in 1966 with an initial focus on offering engineering services related to waterways, harbors, and coastal areas. Over time it has evolved into a comprehensive consulting and engineering firm, specializing in water, environmental solutions, sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, and international development, according to the About webpage provided by Tetra Tech.
