Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, in partnership with United Airlines, has announced a $2.6 billion expansion project for the George Bush International Airport. This ambitious project aims to bolster the ongoing construction activities at Terminal B.
The massive expansion initiative, as revealed by a press release from United Airlines on November 30, envisions the addition of 40 gates designed for larger aircraft. It also involves building a new United Club, which is expected to be the largest in the country upon its completion, and an Early Bag Storage facility - an exclusive feature in North America.
Furthermore, this significant investment promises economic growth through job creation. As per the announcement, it will generate approximately 1,500 new jobs by 2024 and add another 4,000 construction-related employment opportunities. "United Next is about new investments that improve the customer experience and building careers for the next generation of aviation professionals – and all those things and more are coming to life here in Houston," stated Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines.
A report from Houston's CBS station KHOU News anticipates that this major undertaking will reach completion by 2026. Interestingly, this aligns with Houston’s role as one of the hosts for that year’s World Cup.
