The city of Houston has been selected to establish the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub as part of the nationwide network of Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs. This announcement was made by U.S. President Biden and U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. The Houston region is one of seven hubs chosen to receive $7 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
In a press release, the city of Houston expressed their excitement about the selection, stating, "Houston is already the Energy Capital of the World, and this historic announcement is a resounding affirmation of the City’s leadership towards an equitable and inclusive energy transition."
The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, along with the other six hubs, will connect clean hydrogen producers, consumers, and related infrastructure to support the entire process of producing, storing, delivering, and utilizing clean hydrogen. This initiative is expected to receive up to $1.2 billion in funding and will play a significant role in the local economy by generating approximately 45,000 jobs. This includes 35,000 jobs in construction and 10,000 permanent positions.
“I’d like to thank the Secretary Granholm, Under Secretary Crane, and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations at the Department of Energy for this important opportunity to demonstrate that Houston is uniquely able and willing to lead in the global energy transition,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner, according to a press release by the city of Houston. “As I’ve stated repeatedly over the past years, we are uniquely positioned to lead a transformational clean hydrogen hub that will deliver economic growth and good jobs, including in historically underserved communities. HyVelocity will also help scale up national and world clean hydrogen economies, resulting in significant decarbonization gains. I’d also like to thank all of the partners who came together to create HyVelocity Hub a true spirit of public-private collaboration.”
"We knew we had to act to adapt to climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Mayor Sylvester Turner, according to a press release by the city of Houston.
The establishment of the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub in Houston is a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. With the support of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding, the city of Houston is poised to lead the way in the development of clean hydrogen technologies and create thousands of jobs in the process.
