Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner won’t be able to celebrate another Houston Astros World Series triumph before he leaves the city’s highest office, but he’s nonetheless still in their corner. Turner expressed his support for the Astros despite their loss in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Texas Rangers.
"Not the way we wanted our season to end, but I am still proud of our @astros," Turner tweeted on Oct. 23.
The Astros had a difficult ALCS series, facing off against their Lone Star State rivals from Oct. 16-23. The team had a disappointing home record during the regular season, which carried over into the postseason. They dropped Games 1 and 2 at Minute Maid Park but managed to win Games 3, 4, and 5 at Globe Life Field, as previously reported by Houston Daily. However, they ultimately lost Games 6 and 7 to the Rangers, who won the pennant for the first time since 2011.
According to a report from Major League Baseball (MLB), the Rangers became only the second franchise, alongside the 2019 Washington Nationals, to deny the Astros home wins during a postseason round. The loss in Game 7 of the ALCS appears to be the end of Astros skipper Dusty Baker's career, as the 74-year-old intends to retire after a career spanning nearly 50 years, according to Yahoo Sports.
Before the series, Turner entered into a friendly wager with Arlington Mayor Jim Ross. The losing leader would have to wear the winner's jersey. It is unclear whether Turner had to don a Rangers jersey at the office.
Meanwhile, the Rangers will now face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the upcoming World Series. The Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, last year's National League (NL) champion, to claim their first pennant since 2001.
